Trinny Woodall's early experience working in London's financial
center, as the only woman amongst 30 men, gave her an interesting angle on tailored dressing. After
moving on to PR and marketing, the meager salaries paid by those industries taught her how to dress
on a budget.
Finally, 120 shows on satellite television were a gentle preparation
for her current hit What Not To Wear. Trinny lives with her husband Jonny and dog Honey.
How do you think
WNTW will do in the US?
"I'm very interested to find out how Americans will receive the show because I did one interview with
a TV magazine who said 'you talk about tits a lot,' and I said, 'well that's life. It's about women
and their bodies, it should be humorous and we should be able to talk about our bodies.' You can't
get fashion right until you know your body and understand what it can wear and what it can't. You
need to be very honest.
Do you think WNTW
can help women who have no style?
"Some people say you are born with style, I think that is bullshit. I think you can achieve it, but
you just have to understand what suits you. I think a lot of women gravitate to the fashion must-haves.
For example, this season it might be drainpipe trousers which Tom Ford, who must hate women frankly to
make them look so disgusting sometimes, would say you should wear. If you are a pear-shaped woman you
carry your weight on your hips and it's the worst style you could ever dress yourself in.
"If you want to be stylish, it's about knowing what to avoid. If you
know what to avoid then you will inevitably look stylish because you will wear things that people
say 'God you look wonderful', they won't say, 'oh, that's a really odd pair of trousers.' And that's
what you want people to do.
"But this is more than just a show about clothes, it's a huge
emotional journey for a lot of the women and you see that clothes, which are very superficial, matter
a lot to a woman at the end of the day."
Which country is more
fashionable: US or UK?
"I think Americans are polished and they really take care over grooming and I think that is wonderful.
The English are little bit more slovenly but they are more individual, so there are good things on both
sides... and there are bad things...
Most important thing
to have in your wardrobe?
"I would say a really well cut coat. It covers a multitude of sins, so if you are having a fat day you
can put on a great coat. It can go over anything. You can be in your gym gear and put that on and you
feel smart. It could be evening wear and put that on and you look gorgeous.
And the worst thing...
"The pleated taper trouser. With the taper trouser, especially ones with pleats, all the emphasis
and all the width of the trouser is around your middle. It then attracts to areas you don't want to.
And, as it gets narrower at the bottom, you lose out on your legs and you look shorter."
