This old monastery founded in 1128 is the Queen's official residence in Scotland. It was also the home of many Scottish royals: James IV, James V, James VI (James I of England and Scotland), Charles I, etc.

One of its most infamous residents was Mary, Queen of Scots, who married two of her husbands in the Abbey and found her private secretary murdered in her private rooms.

Elizabeth's grandparents, King George V and Queen Mary, modernized the palace.

Today, Elizabeth holds receptions, state functions, and investitures within its walls, and each year during Holyrood Week Elizabeth and Philip invite 8,000 Scottish guests to the Garden Party.

In 2002, the Queen's Gallery will open as a showcase of the Royal Collection.
