Windsor Castle, the largest occupied castle in the world, is one of the Queen's official residences.
For 900 years, this fortress has been occupied by royalty. The site was chosen by William the Conqueror for its proximity to the Tower of London (a day's march).
In 1992, a fire started in the Private Chapel, eventually destroying one fifth of the Castle. The five-year restoration is considered the greatest historic building project in the UK in the 20th century.
Each year, the Order of the Garter ceremony is held at Windsor Castle, and the Queen occasionally hosts a "dine and sleeps" for politicians and public figures.
