Series 2, Episode 6

David may have been made redundant (aka laid off aka fired), but it isn't all over for the Brentmeister General.

Could you imagine Jesus saying, "Oh, I've told a few people here in Bethlehem I'm the son of God; can I just here with mum and dad now?" No, Jesus had to move on to Nazareth. And that's very much like David. He must go out and spread the word. After Slough there's Reading, Aldershot, Bracknell.

Besides, David has an interview scheduled with "Inside Paper." As the interviewer presses ahead with questions about his management style, David insists on writing her article for her: "Put: 'David Brent is refreshingly laid-back for a man with such responsibility.'"

Dawn interrupts the interview to hand in her notice. David worried that would happen, and he advises, "don't throw your career away just because I'm leaving." But it's just a coincidence. Really. Dawn is moving to Florida with Lee.

After grappling with the dice of life, Tim finally breaks up with Rachel, who retreats to her desk in tears.

Back in David's office, the "Inside Paper" reporter looks on as Cooper & Webb Consultants inform David they won't be asking him back as a motivational speaker.

What's more, Tim learns that Dawn is leaving the country and confronts her in the breakroom. Wasn't she going to tell him? Lee pops in and explains the details: they are moving into his sister's huge house for a while. Then they'll get an RV and drive up and down the coast until the cash runs out.

While Tim explains to camera that things could have been different between him and Dawn if only circumstances were different, he suddenly excuses himself and flees the interview.

He pulls Dawn into the meeting room, and once inside, he turns off his microphone. We see them through the blinds talking and hugging. Once Tim returns to his desk, he turns the mic back on and relays, "She said no, by the way."

Back to David...Neil and Jennifer meet with him to go over the details of his redundancy. When Neil extends his hand in thanks to David, David doesn't let go. With tears welling in his eyes, David begs them to reconsider: "Just say that it's not definite now before you go. .. I will try twice as hard, I really will." They sit in silence.

In closing, David has a final bit of philosophy to share: "'If you want the rainbow, you've got to put up with the rain.' Do you know which 'philosopher' said that? Dolly Parton.... And people say she's just a big pair of tits."
