This week, David introduces Donna, a work experience girl (a.k.a. intern) and the daughter of David's best friends, to the Slough branch of Wernham Hogg. While under David's tutelage, he warns he will not have her "tunnel bandied around this office, willy nilly."
During Donna's introductory tour of the office, David explains the inner working of email retrieval (it's easy, innit?), but a new message challenges David's near limitless capacity for comedy: a doctored image of David's head on a woman's body in a compromising position. Everyone in the office has seen it, even Joan who has no email.
The email incident forces David to give Gareth two directives as follows:
- Donna is hands-off, even if she is "up for it."
- Gareth must discover who is responsible for the now infamous doctored photo.
Fortunately Gareth was trained in covert operations in the Territorial Army and he begins the investigation.
As David joins in Tim's Michael Jackson dancing exhibition, Jennifer shows up for a quick chat concerning five practical changes David has implemented to make the Slough branch more efficient than Swindon.
He gives her three, but he has two more if she needs them: Efficiency, Turnover, Profitablility. Although that sounds like management-speak, David also blurts out that he has already made some redundancies...like Julie, someone...in the warehouse...who does general stuff...
Their discussion in interrupted by Gareth, who has concluded his invetigation: Tim is the culprit. But even with David's "best man on the job," Tim publicly reveals that Gareth's investigation is flawed. The real culprit is Chris Finch, David's best mate!
Prompted by Dawn and Jennifer, David apologizes to Tim (even though, with families you don't have to). Cogito ergo sum; Jennifer pushes David to fire Finch. He calls him directly and begins letting him have it, just as Jennifer puts the call on speakerphone: "at the tone, the time will be four, twenty-one and forty seconds."
