Robert Lindsay (Ben)
Ben Harper is a moderately successful family man who has spent his working life as a dentist. This is just as well because, for him, most of his life seems rather like pulling teeth.

Zoë Wanamaker (Susan)
Susan is Ben's ever-loving wife. Her working life was devoted to showing foreign tourists around London. She, therefore, knows her way around London better than she does around her own kitchen! Susan now works in an Art Gallery.

Daniela Denby-Ashe (Janey)
Janey has started and finished university life and managed to combine the short educational experience with the slightly longer commitment of becoming a single parent! She is into fashion labels (as long as they are expensive), credit cards (as long as they are her Father's), and getting her own way (as long as she breathes). She was once married and separated in less than 24 hours.

Gabriel Thomson (Michael)
Michael doesn't like having his picture taken - as you can see. He is the youngest and, without a doubt, the brightest of the Harper children; in fact, let's face it, he's the brightest of the whole family. Still seemingly on course to become the youngest Conservative Prime Minister since William Pitt (and he was only 24!), Michael is about to face his stiffest examination yet - the driving test.

Siobhan Hayes (Abi)
Abi is a young relative of Ben's who came to stay for a few days. Now she has been with them for a couple of years, and Ben now cannot remember what the home was like before she came - much as he tries.

Keiron Self (Roger)
Roger is a young dentist who moved into the dental practice above Ben's. Much to Ben's horror, Roger has become very much a part of Harper family life and an even bigger part of Abi's life.

Rhodri Meilir (Alfie)
Alfie is a friend of Nick, Ben and Susan's now-absent son. Nick once sent Alfie to the Harper household last Christmas to deliver his dirty washing. As with the rest of Ben's life, he draws unwanted visitors like a magnet, and Alfie stays on.

Tayler Marshall (Kenzo)
Kenzo, Janey's son, is now very much a part of family life in the Harper household and is proving to be cleverer than all of them. Even Michael.
