It’s official: Imelda Staunton and Rafe Spall are teaming up for a new streaming comedy series.
The two actors will co-star opposite Esther Smith (Cuckoo, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) in Trying, the first British original series from Apple TV+.
According to Deadline, the half-hour scripted comedy series has been rumored for several months and was made using the working title “Alabama.” It’s now been formally announced and will launch globally on May 1.

Spall and Smith play a couple longing to have a baby in what Apple describes as “a new comedy series from the U.K. about growing up, settling down, and finding someone to love.” The series has been written by Andy Wolton, whose previous credits include U.K. comedies The Coopers Vs The Rest and Lookalikes. Catastrophe director Jim O’Hanlon has directed all eight episodes.
Staunton, who played a memorable foil for Dame Maggie Smith‘s Dowager Countess in last year’s Downton Abbey movie, has another TV series in the works: Flesh and Blood, a dark four-parter co-starring Doctor Who and Being Human alum Russell Tovey. A four-time Olivier Award winner for her stage work, she’s due to return to London’s West End in a revival of Hello Dolly! this summer.
Meanwhile, Spall is due to star in Salisbury, an upcoming BBC miniseries about the shocking real-life Novichok poisoning incident that took place in the English city of Salisbury in 2018.
