David Oyelowo is to portray a beleaguered “veep” in a TV adaptation of The President Is Missing, the 2018 political thriller novel by Bill Clinton and James Patterson.
It’s definitely an intriguing role for the Golden Globe-nominated Selma actor. He’ll play a “powerless and politically aimless” U.S. Vice President who steps up to the top job midway through his administration’s first term. According to Showtime, which has ordered a pilot for the series, Oyelowo’s reluctant leader “walks right into a secret, world-threatening crisis, both inside and outside the White House.”
He also finds himself “attacked by both friends and enemies alike, with scandal and conspiracy swirling around him,” so it’s safe to presume his stint in the Oval Office won’t exactly be cozy.
Oyelowo will serve as an executive producer on the series alongside Clinton, Patterson, and Oscar-winning The Usual Suspects screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie, among others. Anthony Peckham (Sherlock Holmes, Invictus) is writing the script and also serving as an executive producer.
“David brings such enormous depth, sensitivity, and power to every role he plays,” said Gary Levine, co-president of entertainment for Showtime. “Having him as our lead ensures that our series will have the exhilarating suspense of a political thriller along with the juicy complexity of a character drama.”
Shooting is due to start in 2020. In the meantime, we’ll see Oyelowo on the big screen in sci-fi movie Chaos Walking, an adaptation of an acclaimed novel by Patrick Ness, creator of the Doctor Who spin-off series Class. His co-stars in the movie, which is expected in 2020, include Tom Holland, Daisy Ridley, and Mads Mikkelsen.
