Today brings news that even hardcore Beatles fans couldn’t have seen coming – Sir Paul McCartney is writing his first ever stage musical!

The iconic singer-songwriter is working on a musical theater adaptation of Frank Capra’s It’s a Wonderful Life with Lee Hall, writer of acclaimed U.K. movie Billy Elliot and its Tony-winning stage adaptation. McCartney is composing the music, Hall is writing the script, and the pair are collaborating on lyrics.

McCartney explained in a news post on his website that their collaboration was made possible by renowned British theater producer Bill Kenwright.

“Like many of these things this all started with an email,” the musician recalled. “Bill had asked if it was something I might be up for. Writing a musical is not something that had ever really appealed to me but Bill and I met up with Lee Hall and had a chat and I found myself thinking this could be interesting and fun. It’s A Wonderful Life is a universal story we can all relate to.”

Released in theaters in 1946 It’s a Wonderful Life is a Christmas fantasy about a suicidal man whose guardian angel shows him just how much his life has meant to others. Hall called it “my favorite film,” saying: “It has absolutely everything: comedy, pathos and a rare humanity which has touched generation after generation.”

According to Variety, McCartney and Hall’s It’s a Wonderful Life is aiming to debut in the U.K. in 2020 before making a later move to Broadway. McCartney “is still in the final stages of completing songs for his entry into musical theater,” the news post on his website says.
