McMafia and Happy Valley actor James Norton has landed another intriguing TV role in The Nevers, an upcoming sci-fi drama from Joss Whedon (The Avengers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer).
Announced last July, The Nevers enters on a gang of Victorian women with unusual and potentially world-changing abilities known as “the Touched.” Outlander actress Laura Donnelly has already cast as lead character Amalia True.
According to Variety, Norton will play a character called Hugo Swann who’s described as “a pansexual posh boy whose charm has about five years left on its lease.”
Swann runs a secret club, has a side hustle in blackmail, and is said to be “fascinated by the Touched,” so it’s definitely a role we can imagine Norton excelling in.
Other new cast members confirmed for The Nevers include Nick Frost (Hot Fuzz), Denis O’Hare (American Horror Story), Amy Manson (Torchwood, Atlantis), Eleanor Tomlinson (Poldark), and Ben Chaplin (The Crown).
Meanwhile, Olivia Williams (Counterpart, Dollhouse) has been cast as the awesome-named character Lavinia Bidlow. She’s described as a wealthy spinster and supported of “the Touched” who’s “stern and old-fashioned, but as strong-willed and clever as anyone she confronts.”
Whedon, who’s serving as writer, director, executive producer, and showrunner, confirmed that shooting had begun on The Nevers at the start of July. It’s expected to premiere on HBO in 2020.
