If you’ve seen 2007’s The Golden Compass, or read the original novels by Philip Pullman, you may be familiar with what’s to come in the fantasy series His Dark Materials.

The first season is based off of the first book in the trilogy, The Golden Compass (also known as Northern Lights in some countries), which starred Daniel Craig as Lord Asriel in the film adaptation.

James McAvoy is now taking over in that role, shouting in the first look footage, “Who is willing to fight for truth!!??” when realizing children in their area are being kidnapped and held captive.

In the first official trailer, recently released by BBC, we also see Ruth Wilson as Marisa Coulter and Lin-Manuel Miranda as Lee Scoresby.

The story is based in an alternate universe and follows a young girl named Lyra Belacqua (Dafne Keen). She’s in search of her friend Roger (Ben Walker), who has gone missing. She heads to the far North to find him, similar to that of the Arctic in our world.

This seems like a lot for a child to take on, but she is far from alone in this fight. As we see in the above clip, James Cosmo‘s Farder Coram, a Gyptian advisor to the king, declares, “They are stealing children. This IS war.” McAvoy’s Asriel and Wilson’s Coulter are both defenders of the children, too.

In addition to the all-star cast, we can look for royal polar bears, witches, and companions known as daemons.

His Dark Materials is a BBC/HBO co-production, with the eight-part series premiering later this year.

In the meantime, you can look for Ruth Wilson returning as Alice in the next season of Luther premiering on BBC America this coming June 2 at 8/7c.

Is this something you’ve been looking forward to!?
