It’s looking as though the next Batman could be a Brit: Robert Pattinson and Nicholas Hoult are reportedly in the running to play the caped crusader.
According to Deadline, the two actors are “atop a shortlist” to star as Bruce Wayne in The Batman, the upcoming DC superhero movie from director Matt Reeves (Cloverfield, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes).
The iconic role was famously played by British-American actor Christian Bale in a highly acclaimed trilogy of movies from director Christopher Nolan, which concluded in 2012.
Pattinson has already been linked to the new movie, which was initially conceived as a vehicle for Ben Affleck‘s Batman from 2017’s Justice League. However, it was confirmed in January that Affleck had exited the project. At present, the Twilight actor is said to be “holding the edge” over Hoult, though the report notes that both actors are liked by the casting team.
Hoult will reprise his superhero role as Hank McCoy/Beast in X-Men: Dark Phoenix, due in theaters June 7, but The Batman would be Pattinson’s most high-profile project since the Twilight franchise concluded in 2012. Since then, he’s favored smaller movies such as 2014’s Hollywood satire Maps to the Stars and last year’s quirky sci-fi-horror High Life.
Hoult recently signed up to co-star with Angelina Jolie in the wilderness-set thriller Those Who Wish Me Dead, so even if The Batman doesn’t pan out, he won’t be deprived of an exciting project going forward.
