Following the huge box office success of Black Panther and Us, Lupita Nyong’o has signed up for another intriguing genre role.
The Oscar-winning 12 Years a Slave actress is to produce and star in a sci-fi comedy that’s being described as “Men in Black meets Miss Congeniality.” The movie is currently being referred to as Miss Universe, but won’t be released under that title, Deadline reports.
It’s the latest project from Australian writer-director Abe Forsythe, who also directed Nyong’o’s upcoming horror-comedy movie Little Monsters, which won positive reviews when it premiered at January’s Sundance Film Festival.
In that movie, Nyong’o’ plays a kindergarten teacher trying to protect her kids from a zombie outbreak, aided by a washed-up musician (Alien: Covenant‘s Alexander England) and a famous kids’ show personality (Josh Gad). It’s due to be released on Hulu at a date to be confirmed.
Meanwhile, the new sci-fi comedy is the third movie project that Nyong’o now has in the works: she’s also due to star in 355, a spy thriller that will team her with Jessica Chastain, Marion Cotillard, and Penélope Cruz, and The Killer, director John Woo‘s remake of his own 1989 Hong Kong action thriller.
Nyong’o will also reprise her motion-capture role as intergalactic pirate Maz Kanata in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which hits theaters December 20.
