Don Quixote, a 17th century literary figure, is being given a second life with Terry Gilliam writing the knightly figure into his modern day film The Man Who Killed Don Quixote. The first official trailer, starring Adam Driver and Jonathan Pryce, was just released yesterday (February 25):
Adam Driver portrays “the man” mentioned in the title. He takes on the role of a cynical advertising director named Toby who made a student film entitled The Man Who Killed Don Quixote in his youth.
In the film, that shoot took place in Sancho Panza, Spain where he cast a local man by the name of Javier (Pryce) to play Quixote. Fast-forward to current day, Toby is back in Spain shooting a commercial and he runs into Javier once again. He learns Javier still thinks he is Quixote. And, Javier/Quixote believes Toby to be his squire named Sancho Panza.
There’s a lot going on in the storyline, as well as the first-look trailer, and it’s a bit of a whirlwind to try and keep up. Hopefully, it will all fall into place when seen from start to finish. It’s been getting some advance reviews, which are mixed, but Gilliam is not sweating it, saying, “I don’t mind a bad review when it’s about the film I made,” reports AV Club.
He points out, “I know that my films work better for some people. There is a certain way of approaching life or looking at the world. They get on the ride with me and go all the way.”
The film will have a theatrical release, but for only one night on April 10. So, pay attention your first go!
