We’ve seen Nicole Kidman take on many roles, including lover, mother and even… killer. But the wham, bam, shoot ’em up crime drama Destroyer marks the first time she’s played the protagonist in an action film.
Kidman takes on the role of seasoned law enforcer, LAPD detective Erin Bell. In flashbacks we get a glimpse of her early days, when she went undercover and infiltrated a gang in the California desert.
The film screened at the 2018 Toronto Film Festival, but the first look trailer just released today (October 17). According to the synopsis, her involvement with the gang ended with “tragic results.”
It’s not clear what transpired, but The West Wing star Bradley Whitford, who is listed as DiFranco, says to her in the clip, “You chose to play cops and robbers. And, you lost.”
What does that meaaaaan??? Maybe you can work it out from the new footage:
Something we did pick up on in the clip was the moment a gang member says to Bell, “If we do this, we accept the consequences. Do you love me?” She stares back at him, with adoration in her eyes, and says, “You know I do.”
Uh oh. Possibly she fell for her mark?
Whatever happened back in the day, Bell is pissed now, and she’s not going to let it go: “I’m mad. I’m mad. I’m still mad. It’s burnt a circuit in my brain.”
There are a lot of moving parts, and this is one of those teasers that makes us want to know more.
Destroyer will be available in select NYC and L.A. theaters on December 25. The release will expand in January.
In addition to Kidman and Whitford, we can also look for Orphan Black star Tatiana Maslany as Petra.
