C.S. Lewis‘ children’s stories about a lion, a witch and a wardrobe that leads to a magical land, have been delighting readers since 1950, when the first The Chronicle of Narnia book was published.

Now Netflix is adapting the franchise into a TV series and a set of movies. Although this is the first time a company has bought the rights to all seven books, Lewis’ novels have been adapted for screen before. In 2005, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was made into a film, with two sequels, Prince Caspian (2008) and in 2010, The Voyage of Dawn Treader.

But the amount of content acquired this time around might explain Netflix’s plans for both a TV series and — possibly multiple — movies. It’s not yet clear how the stories will be broken up and divvied out on-screen, but we’re keen to find out.

Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer at Netflix, talked about the longevity of the fantastical stories, saying, “C.S. Lewis’ beloved Chronicles of Narnia stories have resonated with generations of readers around the world.

“Families have fallen in love with characters like Aslan and the entire world of Narnia, and we’re thrilled to be their home for years to come.”

If you’re not familiar with the stories, Aslan is the Great Lion, King of Narnia, who can speak. The main characters are the Pevensie children — Edmund, Susan, Lucy and Peter — who discover that the back of their closet is actually a portal to the alternate universe.

Reportedly, The Chronicle of Narnia books have sold 100 million copies over the years and have been translated into 47 languages.

Douglas Gresham, Lewis’ stepson, talked about the late author’s reach and unending legacy, saying, “It is wonderful to know that folks from all over are looking forward to seeing more of Narnia, and that the advances in production and distribution technology have made it possible for us to make Narnian adventures come to life all over the world.”

We can’t wait to see more of Narnia on our screens.
