Billie Piper (Doctor Who, Penny Dreadful) has begun production on the feature film Rare Beasts. Not only is the Doctor Who actress starring in the project, she also wrote the script and is directing.

The drama, which marks Piper’s directorial debut, is being described as an “anti rom-com,” and follows career-driven single mother Mandy (Piper), who falls for an angsty traditionalist named Pete (Leo Bill).

In addition to Piper, Rare Beasts will feature performances from David Thewlis (Fargo), Kerry Fox (The Split), Leo Bill (Taboo), and Toby Woolf (The Last Post).

We’ve done some “investigating” via social media, and it seems things are well underway…

Since we don’t have official first look photos or any footage for Rare Beasts just yet, we’ll leave you with this Twitter post from Piper, who shared a picture of herself with a Rose Tyler doll, and signed off, “#drwho for life!!!!!!”

Piper starred as Doctor Who companion Rose Tyler from 2005-2013. In 2007, she played high end prostitute Belle in the TV drama Secret Diary of a Call Girl. More recently, she starred in Showtime’s Penny Dreadful (2014-2016) and in the 2018 TV miniseries Collateral, opposite Carey Mulligan.
