Emma Watson looks set to return the favor for Emma Stone, four years after the latter replaced her in La La Land.
Variety reports the Harry Potter star will take on the role earmarked for her fellow Emma in an upcoming film version of Little Women, which already boasts an impressive cast including Meryl Streep, Laura Dern, Saoirse Ronan, Timothée Chalamet, James Norton, and Florence Pugh.
It’s the brainchild of writer-director Greta Gerwig, who is following up the success of her directorial debut Lady Bird with an ambitious adaptation of the Louisa May Alcott novel.
Stone was expected to play Meg, the eldest of the March sisters, though that hadn’t been confirmed officially. She’s now had to drop out, due to promotional commitments for The Favourite, the quirky period film that sees her starring alongside Rachel Weisz and Olivia Colman.
Step forward Watson, who famously let slip the opportunity to play the lead role in La La Land. She and Miles Teller were originally slated to play Hollywood lovers Mia and Sebastian, until scheduling conflicts — specifically, Watson’s gruelling schedule of singing, dancing and horse-riding lessons to play Belle in Beauty and the Beast — led to them being swapped out for Stone and her Crazy, Stupid Love co-star Ryan Gosling.
Stone even went on to win an Oscar for her troubles, though there are no hard feelings. Watson recently cleared up rumors surrounding her possible involvement, explaining it “just didn’t work out.”
Perhaps the same happened again, with Emma Watson this time awarded for her last-minute performance in a film.
