DC’s post-apocalyptic sci-fi comic book series Y: The Last Man is being made into a pilot for FX Networks, simply called Y.
The story revolves around Yorick Brown, who we’ve just learned will be played by Barry Keoghan (Dunkirk, The Killing of a Sacred Deer).
Yorick is the last man on Earth, but that’s not all… he’s also the world’s only living male mammal, excluding his pet monkey, Ampersand. In the comic book series, all mammals, including embryos and sperm containing the Y chromosome, are wiped out by a plague. Incidentally, a lot of women are also killed in this unexpected extermination of males, falling victim to disasters born out of the sudden death of half the population, like plane crashes.
With only one male role, Y will call for quite a women-centric cast. FX has already filled some of the roles with major names, including Diane Lane (Man of Steel), who’s set to play Yorick’s mother, Senator Jennifer Brown. We can also look for Imogen Poots (Knight of Cups) as his sister, Hero Brown. Juliana Canfield (Succession) will play Beth, Yorick’s love interest, while Lashana Lynch (Bulletproof) will take on the role of Secret Service Agent 355, who’s hired to protect Earth’s last man.
The pilot will be directed by Melina Matsoukas (Insecure), with Aïda Mashaka Croal (Luke Cage) and Michael Green (American Gods) acting as co-showrunners.
If you’re not familiar with Keoghan, he took the lead in the 2017 thriller The Killing of a Sacred Deer, opposite Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman.
