We’re getting our Aussie fix this week. Yesterday we reported that Rebel Wilson will star in a new comic book adaptation, and now we’ve learned that another favorite Antipodean actor, Russell Crowe, will play disgraced Fox News honcho Roger Ailes.
Earlier this week, Empire confirmed that Crowe will take on the role of Ailes, who was hired by Rupert Murdoch in 1996 to head up Fox News, in a new miniseries for Showtime.
The eight-parter is based on author Gabriel Sherman‘s biography The Loudest Voice in the Room, which details Ailes’ downfall following allegations of sexual misconduct in 2016.
When his TV career in ended abruptly, he set his sights on politics and the Trump campaign. Ailes died last year at the age of 77.
Showtime believes there’s interest in the “collision between the media and politics,” with the channel’s President and CEO David Nevins telling Variety, “We’ve seen this phenomenon depicted on screen as far back as the story of Charles Foster Kane, and it finds contemporary embodiment in the rise and fall of Roger Ailes.”
Nevins also commented on Crowe’s involvement: “With Russell Crowe in the lead role, this limited series promises to be a defining story for this era.”
Sherman is working with Spotlight writer-director Tom McCarthy to adapt the book for the small screen, but an air date has yet to be announced.
This will mark the first major U.S. television project for Crowe. He got his start on Australian TV, starring in the soap opera Neighbours, back in 1987.
In case you missed it, here’s a glance at Crowe’s early days as Kenny Larkin:
Crowe has completed filming on Boy Erased, also a biopic (September 28). It focuses on the son of a Baptist preacher who is coerced into taking part in a gay conversion program. The film also stars Lucas Hedges, Nicole Kidman and Joel Edgerton.
He’s also signed on for The True History of the Kelly Gang, another biopic (we’re seeing a pattern here), which is in pre-production. The historical drama about Australian bush-ranger Ned Kelly will also star Nicholas Hoult and Dacre Montgomery.
