It’s hard not to be intrigued by a miniseries called A Very English Scandal, especially when you learn that former Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies has written it, and Hugh Grant and Ben Whishaw have been cast in lead roles.

Now the first trailer has been released for the upcoming three-parter, and it definitely leaves us wanting more. Check it out below.

Based on a non-fiction book by John Preston, A Very English Scandal tells the story of Jeremy Thorpe, a prominent British MP who fell from grace pretty spectacularly in the ’70s.

Set at a time when the U.K. had only just decriminalized homosexuality, it follows Thorpe (Grant) as he takes desperate measures to hide his relationship with ex-lover Norman Scott (Whishaw). Thorpe eventually stood trial after being accused of conspiring to murder Scott, and… well, it would be a shame to reveal any more if you don’t know the story already.

Shot last autumn, as we reported at the time, A Very English Scandal definitely counts as prestige TV. It’s directed by Stephen Frears, whose previous credits include The Queen and Florence Foster Jenkins, and has a stellar ensemble cast that includes Eve Myles (Torchwood), Alex Jennings (The Crown), Blake Harrison (The Inbetweeners), and Jason Watkins (The Lost Honour of Christopher Jefferies).

Though it’s expected to premiere in the U.K. later this month, A Very English Scandal hasn’t officially been picked up by a U.S. network yet. Given the level of talent involved, it’s safe to presume this won’t remain the case for very long.

Are you looking forward to watching A Very English Scandal? Will it continue Hugh Grant’s post-Florence Foster Jenkins career renaissance?
