Tom Cruise took our breath away this morning (May 31) by announcing that filming has begun on Top Gun 2.

Of course, we’ve known for a while a follow-up to the classic 1986 movie was on its way. There were rumors that Tom and producer Jerry Bruckheimer were discussing the possibility, before Tom confirmed it was happening to our Graham last summer.

He later let it slip that the sequel would be called Top Gun: Maverick, and would come replete with aviators, jets and a Harold Faltermeyer soundtrack. But today (May 31) came the news we were waiting for: Tom is back in the role that made him a global mega star, and filming has begun on the movie.

The Mission: Impossible star made the announcement by tweeting a picture of himself clutching Maverick’s helmet, with an F-14A Tomcat in the background:

Now, if that picture hasn’t got you singing “Danger Zone,” then we don’t know what to suggest.

Top Gun: Maverick is slated to take off in theaters on July 12, 2019.

Are you excited to see the return of Maverick?
