Dame Helen Mirren‘s film Winchester, which revolves around a haunted mansion, is set to come out next week (February 1). It makes good timing for Mirren to tell about her own run-in with what she thought was a ghost.

When sitting down with the hosts of This Morning, Mirren sets the stage: after marrying her husband back in 1997, they spent their wedding night at Castle Stuart, near Inverness, Scotland.

She was told by the manager that he had “absolutely” seen ghosts during renovations and delivered a warning to Mirren, saying, “The room that is most haunted is the room that you and your husband are going to be spending your wedding night in.”

In the middle of the night, she was woken up, startled by a presence in the room.

And, what was it? Mirren tells the story from start to finish:

While not supernatural, she definitely had a fright and it makes for a good story.

If you’d like to see more of Mirren, she is currently filming The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, taking on the role of Mother Ginger. The fantasy adventure film is set to premiere on November 2 of this year. She’s also set to star in Luc Besson‘s Anna, opposite Cillian Murphy and Luke Evans. The release date is yet to be confirmed.
