Well, well, well. We didn’t want to get too excited when we first heard the rumor last week, but this new wrinkle seems to all but confirm it.
The Crown star Vanessa Kirby posted a photo to her Instagram account on Saturday (January 13), which suggests Helena Bonham Carter will indeed be her successor in seasons three and four of Netflix’s epic regal drama:
Now, this could be Vanessa playing games with us, of course – but that caption, however brief, is surely designed to fuel speculation.
And unsurprisingly, it’s worked: fans have already been expressing their excitment at the prospect of the right royal HBC playing Princess Margaret, as The Crown heads into the late 1960s and 1970s.

The photo also shows a faint resemblance between the two actresses, though Vanessa’s hair is a lot lighter than we’re accustomed to. She’s recently been in London filming Mission: Impossible 6, where she was spotted having an on-camera smooch with Tom Cruise.
Clearly her career has gone from strength to strength since departing The Crown, in a move planned from the outset. She and her co-stars Claire Foy and Matt Smith will all move on as their characters age, with the majestic Olivia Colman set to play Queen Elizabeth II as she enters middle age, and Helena (it now seems safe to say) her wayward sister.
