There was some pushback when fans of Karen Gillan (Doctor Who) first saw her less-than-there wardrobe for the reimagination of Jumanji, but with the first trailer for the 2017 release we get an inkling as to why she is so scantily clad.
The new film, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, kicks off with a group of teenagers sent to detention. Actually, they’re tasked with cleaning the school’s basement where they find a vintage video game set. The teens are sucked into the game, and transformed into their avatar of choice, resulting in over-the-top archetypes with characters like Franklin “Moose” Finbar (Kevin Hart), Professor Shelly Oberon (Jack Black), Dr. Smolder Braveston (Dwayne Johnson), and, finally, Ruby Roundhouse (Gillan).
The kids didn’t expect to actually step into these roles, and if they did, they may have chosen differently. Martha, who seems a bit shy, lands in the Ruby Roundhouse avatar, exclaiming out loud, “Why am I wearing half a shirt and short-shorts… in the jungle??” Even she is puzzled by the lack of gear. Our guess is that it wouldn’t be a complete set without the “man killer” trope.
Gillan herself provided a hint with this tweet, when the chatter first started:

The one-liners in the first look definitely had us LOLing. Hopefully all the good stuff isn’t in the trailer, but we have high hopes for this remake/reboot/reimagination… whatever you’d like to call it.
The original Jumanji premiered in 1995, starring Robin Williams, Kirsten Dunst, and Bradley Pierce. The story revolved around an ancient board game that when opened released dangers into the actual world, which couldn’t be undone until the game was completed.
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle hits theaters later this year on December 20.
