The cameras haven’t even started rolling on new X-Men movie Dark Phoenix, but that hasn’t stopped James McAvoy getting into character as Professor Charles Xavier.

He posted a video on Instagram on Saturday (June 17) showing how he’s prepping for the role — specifically, how he’s achieving Professor X’s famously smooth skull.

Shaving his head has almost become a rite of passage for the start of any X-Men movie, as this clip with James’s older Professor X counterpart Sir Patrick Stewart demonstrated.

This time, however, James is on his own:

The movie is the thirteenth in the X-Men series, if you include the Wolverine and Deadpool spin-offs (and we most certainly do).

Production is due to start later this summer, reuniting the cast of 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse, including Michael Fassbender (Magneto), Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), Nicholas Hoult (Beast), Alexandra Shipp (Storm), Tye Sheridan (Cyclops), and Kodi Smit-McPhee (Nightcrawler).

According to CinemaBlend, Game of Thrones Sophie Turner will also be reprising her X-Men: Apocalypse role of Jean Grey. So far not much is known about the new film’s plot, or Professor X’s role in it, but the original X-Men comics may hold a clue: in those, Jean is possessed by a cosmic entity called the Phoenix Force, which drastically boosts her powers and sends her on a rampage throughout the galaxy.

Not only that, but Miss Sloane star Jessica Chastain is rumored to be in line for the role of the villain, an alien empress called Liliandra. Otherwise, it’s a mystery — though we do at least know the new movie will honor the franchise’s 10-year(ish) time jump trend and take place a decade after the events of X-Men: Apocalypse, which was set in 1983. Sooo, 1993? (We’re math whizzes here at Anglo.) Could a “Macarena” soundtrack be in the cards?

We’ll find out exactly what the new film entails from November 2, 2018, when Dark Phoenix opens in theaters. X-Men fans don’t have to wait that long for their next fix, however: between now and then, both The New Mutants and Deadpool 2 will make their debut.

Are you psyched to see James’ bald head again?
