OK, that might be a bit of a stretch, but Graham Norton chatted up mega movie star Tom Cruise about the possibility on his couch last year: Norton asked, “Is it true? Is there going to be a Top Gun 2,” in October 2016. Cruise didn’t say, “Yes,” or, “No,” but settled on, “We’re discussing it.” Graham implores, “Oh do it — go on.”
And, spoiler alert (not really), as of yesterday (May 23), the sequel IS happening. Cruise appeared on an Australian talk show, called Sunrise, and lo and behold, surprise to the hosts, he unexpectedly confirmed the sequel right then and there, simply saying, “It’s true,” while nodding his head and grinning from ear to ear.

The hosts didn’t quite believe him, continuously asking, “Really? Really? When? Tom!” The short answer to that is: “I’m going to start filming it, probably, in the next year,” from the man who portrayed Maverick, an ace pilot, in the original 1986 film. While, “probably” might sound a little vague, Cruise sounds very adamant this is moving forward, tidying up the interview, with, “It’s happening. It is definitely happening.”
It wasn’t a huge surprise to us, though — Graham Norton knew it all along!
This isn’t the first time The Graham Norton Show has foreshadowed such an announcement. Dame Helen Mirren expressed her desire to be in the latest Fast & Furious movie, and guess what? She was in it!
But we know what you’re thinking: WHAT ABOUT BOZO?!
Well, unfortunately he’s retired. But here’s an interview with real-life pilot, Captain Lloyd “Bozo” Abel talking about the iconic tower flyby scene:
It’s too early to say who might be returning in addition to Cruise, but the film also starred Val Kilmer, Kelly McGillis, Tim Robbins and Meg Ryan, with Bozo making an on-screen appearance in addition to his expert advice as a flight consultant. That would be a fun crew to see reunite.
Possibly Graham will be invited to make a cameo, you know, because he made this all happen…
