This is one for the books. There’s been a lot of speculation about what Professor Albus Dumbledore got up to before we encounter him in the Harry Potter books, but none of it mentioned he might have looked like Jude Law.

But that’s exactly what he will look like in the next Fantastic Beasts movie, the second of five films planned that will outline the wizarding backstory to the showdown between Voldemort and The Boy Who Lived.

According to official Harry Potter site Pottermore, the Young Pope star will play Dumbledore decades before he became Headmaster at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

According to official Harry Potter site Pottermore, the Young Pope star will play Dumbledore decades before he became Headmaster at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The role was made famous by Richard Harris, bringing the character to the big screen in 2001’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and 2002’s The Chamber of Secrets. Sadly, Harris passed way in 2002. Michael Gambon stepped in to continue the story.

At this point in the professor’s backstory he is the school’s Transfiguration professor and a contemporary of Gellert Grindelwald, the charismatic dark wizard who believes wizards are superior to Muggles and No-Majs.

Grindelwald, as we already know, will be played by Johnny Depp, meaning the two Oscar nominees will go face to face in the new movie.

Like the first film in the Fantastic Beasts series, it will be written by J.K. Rowling and move “deeper into an increasingly dark time for the wizarding world, where Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) and our other heroes have to decide on their allegiances.”

Oo-er. You mean we have to choose between Jude Law or Johnny Depp? It should be no surprise, of course, that fans on Twitter have already made their decision:
