Occasionally, the sometimes buttoned-up Victoria Beckham shows off her playful side, like last night (March 30) when she joined James Corden to bring us the “reboot no one asked for.” She’s referring, of course, to their Mannequin movie-inspired installment of Carpool Karaoke.
When the below clip kicks off, it all seems very familiar, with a narration style similar to what we first heard in the 1987 classic. The voiceover explains, “Heee was a talk show host. And sheee was a mannequin.”
Well, it’s familiar to us. But if you haven’t seen the original film, starring ’80s Brat Packer Andrew McCarthy and Sex and the City‘s Kim Cattrall, you may need some speeding up. The film follows a young guy working in a department store. He stays late at night to decorate the windows and falls for… a mannequin. She comes to life, but he’s the only one who can see her moving and talking. Naturally, his friends think he’s losing it, but actually he’s just crazy in love.
It turns out both Beckham and Corden are big fans of the film, and so they developed this tribute, 30-years after its release, where they act out the scenes that made the movie such a cult hit. You might be thinking, “That’s all well and good, but where does the Carpool Karaoke come in?” Oh, just you wait — there’s more. Corden is so in love with the living doll (Beckham) that he’s willing to sacrifice his chance at happiness and let her go. He drives the former Spice Girl to the U.S. one-stop shopping chain store Target so she can reunite with “others like her.” Very generous, James!
And, yep, they sing the Spice Girls song, “Spice Up Your Life” along the way:
Here’s a look at the trailer for the original, if you’d like to compare the two:
