Celebrated scientist Stephen Hawking is in the market for a new “voice,” and, as luck would have it, there are plenty of stars desperate to get the fruits of their vocal chords associated with one of the greatest minds in modern physics.
Or so a new video would have us believe. It was released Friday (March 24) to coincide with the airing of Red Nose Day in the U.K., an all-night televised charity drive to raise money for Comic Relief.
A host of A-listers auditioned for the role, ranging from Liam Neeson, Simon Cowell, and Stephen Fry to Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, and Lin-Manuel Miranda, while Geri “Ginger Spice” Halliwell, Gordon Ramsay, and even Miss Piggy gave it their best shot.
John Boyega gave it a go, pointing out his recent space experience would put him in a good position for knowing about black holes, but it was his fellow Star Wars actor Felicity Jones who arguably had a bigger claim to the role: she played Stephen’s wife in The Theory of Everything, after all.
Finally though came the most obvious choice: Eddie Redmayne. He of course not only played a young Hawking alongside Felicity, but also won the Oscar for Best Actor for his efforts.
Hawking, however, was unimpressed. Watch to see what happens (and which British icon eventually gets the job):
It’s not the first time Hawking has shown his funny side. Just last year he went head-to-head with Paul Rudd, while in 2015 he starred in a sketch with Little Britain‘s David Walliams, and took the opportunity of a serious Q&A in the same year to give hope to One Directioners everywhere.
You can watch the full Red Nose Day special in the U.S. on May 25. Also airing that same night is the new 10-minute Love Actually sequel with many of the original cast, including Hugh Grant, Keira Knightley, and Andrew Lincoln reprising their roles.
