Filming has begun on the Pacific Rim sequel, Pacific Rim: Uprising, and its star, John Boyega, is keen to share what he’s been working on. Boyega, best-known for playing Finn in 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, took to social media, giving us a first glimpse of him in character.

But before we jump to the photo, let’s catch up on the franchise and Boyega’s role. The first installment, released in 2013, was set in the future, where we witnessed humankind battling monstrous sea creatures with giant robot-like weapons called Jaegers. Idris Elba took on the role of Stacker Pentecost, a Marshal in the Pan Pacific Defense Corps. In the follow-up, due for release in 2018, Boyega will play Stacker’s son, Jake Pentecost.

Now that we’ve got that covered, onto the reveal with Boyega’s tweet. We find him sitting, clad in black, looking a little downbeat. He appears to be on a ship. We’re guessing he’s trapped in there, though it’s not entirely clear. Whatever the case, the guy could probably use a giant screwdriver right about now:

Maybe he’s just hanging out and enjoying some alone time. But we’re guessing the truth is slightly more high-drama, and that there are indeed some pressing issues happening on the outside. Alas, the premise of the follow-up has yet to be released. In fact, this is all that’s actually been said so far in reference to the sequel: “The follow-up to Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim.”

While information on the next film is limited, there are some clues in this poster. We see the Jaegers are back (and they go to work in the rain). And if there’s a need for Jaegers, we can safely assume there’s still strife in the world:

In the below we get a closer look at Boyega and his finely manicured ‘stashe on the Pacific Rim: Uprising set. We’re loving the cool kid racing stripe buzzed in the side of his head. And it looks like he’s having a fun time with the cast and crew:

If you need a reminder, here’s the trailer for the original:

The films’ co-creator Guillermo del Toro talked about casting Boyega in a recent interview, saying, “I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox. The Pacific Rim universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. ‘The World saving the world’ was our goal and I couldn’t think of a better man for the job.”

Pacific Rim: Uprising is directed by Steven S. DeKnight. Other names that will join Boyega include Adria Arjona (True Detective), Scott Eastwood (Suicide Squad), Tian Jin (Kong: Skull Island) and Charlie Day (Horrible Bosses). There’s also been mention of Charlie Hunnam reprising his role as Raleigh Becket, but it’s yet to be confirmed.

Do you have any theories about what to expect?
