Dame Helen Mirren is irreplaceable in Prime Suspect as DCI Jane Tennison, of course (that goes unsaid). But, keeping in mind that Prime Suspect 1973 is a prequel, versus a remake, there’s no concern of anyone spoiling the groundwork Mirren has already laid down… we’re just getting more to the story!

Newbie actress Stefanie Martini, whose first TV role was in 2016 as Georgina Mortmaigne in the period drama Endeavor, stars as a 22-year-old Tennison in Prime Suspect 1973. She takes us back to the beginning when Tennison started out as a probation officer in the 1970s. This was before her ball-busting days as detective in the long-running series from 1991 through 2006.

We now have a look at Tennison’s early days in law enforcement:

There’s not a ton going on in the photo, with no set details in the backdrop. But her steely-eyed expression says a lot — she looks unshakeable.

There is a recently released trailer, which could help fill in the blanks, but unfortunately it’s not available in the U.S. But you lucky U.K. dwellers can take a peek.

All is not lost, since the six-part series will air on PBS in the U.S. and ITV in the U.K. later this year, so, hopefully we will get a look at the new footage sooner than later.

In the meantime, if you’re now craving detective dramas, you can check out this Anglo Brit binge post, which leads with the original Prime Suspect.

What do you think of a prequel for this series?
