Doctor Who Christmas Special: The Return of Doctor Mysterio

Whoa, whoa, whoa, what’s this? Doctor Who has gotten a supehero makeover. …and we like it.

The feature trailer for the 2016 Doctor Who Christmas Special, entitled “The Return of Doctor Mysterio,” has just landed today (December 9). The 30-second first look gives us plenty to mull over before its premiere (December 25).

We know who the Doctor is, of course (Peter Capaldi). But who is that masked man? Apparently he’s known as “The Ghost,” but clearly there are more question to be answered. He and the Doctor team up with Daily Chronicle reporter Lucy Fletcher, who definitely gives us that Lois Lane feel, to fight against floating alien brains.

“The Return of Doctor Mysterio” may be taking on a fun twist, but it’s all still very quintessentially Doctor Who:

You probably recognize Matt Lucas from Little Britain in the above clip. Lucas returns for the Christmas Special, reprising his role as Nardole, first seen in 2015’s “The Husbands of River Song.”

And while we’re wanting to know more about who “The Ghost” actually is, we do know who the actor is playing him: Justin Chatwin. We thought we recognized those cheek bones peeking out from under the eye mask. Chatwin starred as the richy-rich schemer Steve on Showtime’s Shameless from 2011 through 2015. You may have also spotted him on BBC AMERICA’s Orphan Black as Jason Kellerman in 2015.

The Doctor Who Christmas Special will air around the world on Christmas Day, December 25.

Is this a Christmas miracle come true … early?
