You know that awkward moment when you turn up to a party and you’re the only one in fancy dress? Well, Tom Hiddleston knows it all too well.
Or so he wanted us to believe during his surprise appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night (November 16). The British charmer wore a full gorilla costume to launch the new trailer for Kong: Skull Island, prompting a rather surprised Jimmy to ask where on earth he got the idea.
Cue an awkward exchange, in which Tom explained he’d been persuaded by someone on Jimmy’s team, who told him that’s what Leonardo DiCaprio had done when he was promoting The Revenant.
There’s just one problem with that: Leonardo has never appeared on his show, let alone dressed as a grizzly.
Watch Tom’s reaction, followed by the trailer:
This latest look at director Jordan Vogt-Roberts‘ take on the King Kong story is the second trailer to be released, after the first one was released during July’s Comic-Con in San Diego.
And while the first trailer merely teased us with a glimpse of Kong in silhouette, this latest one doesn’t stint on showing him up close, revealing him to be a much larger version of the original 1933 ape who scaled the Empire State Building.
Kong’s sheer size was emphasised by the film’s poster, which was tweeted by Tom’s co-star Brie Larson a few hours before his chat show appearance:

OK, so… that is one big monkey.
And if we weren’t already convinced of Kong’s size in this reboot of the classic story, Brie’s post was followed minutes later by another stunning poster tweeted by Tom:

Kong: Skull Island opens in theaters March 10, with Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman, John C. Reilly, Toby Kebbell (Warcraft), Corey Hawkins (Straight Outta Compton), Jing Tian (The Great Wall), and Tom Wilkinson (Snowden) starring alongside Tom and Brie.
Let’s just hope Tom’s character has got a better plan than befriending Kong in a gorilla costume.
