James McAvoy is terrifyingly good in M. Night Shyamalan‘s Split. He’s a little too good as a multi-personality psychopath because he’s just so believable.

Sometimes the scariest films are those that follow a story that could really happen. Like in this case: Three girls being abducted in the middle of the day by a man, who is not just a man, but a woman, and a small child, along with 21 other personalities rattling around in his body.

We met Kevin (McAvoy), who appears to be the leader of the pack, in the first trailer. And now we’re getting a little bit of background on him through his therapist (Betty Buckley) in the second trailer.

She asks a very important question during a session with Kevin, “Did something happen?”:

Her question is quite the understatement. Yes, yes, something has happened. And something very bad is about to happen. We just don’t know what it is, yet.

The creep factor goes up with the new footage, because like the girls, we had hope 9-year-old Hedwig (also played by McAvoy, just to be clear) would be able to help them escape. But like any small child, he doesn’t want his new friends to leave (then the fun would be over).

Split hits theaters on January 20, 2017.

Are you going to watch this with someone you can cling to (highly suggested)?
