You may have heard of a therapeutic exercise, to write a letter to someone and then just toss it away. It’s supposed to help get thoughts and energy out, but without having an actual confrontation.

In David Frankel‘s (Marley & Me) new film Collateral Beauty, Will Smith portrays Howard Inlet, a man grieving after the loss of his young daughter. Inlet writes letters to … not a person … but love, time and death.

And Death (Dame Helen Mirren) comes to see him in the below trailer.

Did that just give you chills? Yeah, us too.

It’s not just death, though. Time (Jacob Latimore) and Love (Keira Knightley) make a visit, too.

Smith’s character understands the conversations he’s having may make others think he’s losing it. But, at the same time, these conversations may give him back his life:

Kate Winslet, Edward Norton, Naomie Harris and Michael Peña round out the cast.

Collateral Beauty is set to his U.S. theaters on December 16.
