We haven’t seen Sir Patrick Stewart take on the role of Professor Charles Xavier since 2014’s X Men: Days of Future Past, with James McAvoy stepping in to play the younger version of the mutants’ savior.

The good news is we get to see Stewart revisit his role in the forthcoming Wolverine film, currently referred to as the untitled Wolverine sequel.

The semi-bad news is this may be his last time stepping into the X Men universe.

Stewart talked to ITV about his involvement with X Men, saying, “I would imagine this is probably the end of this franchise for me.”

Oof, that sounds so final.

Okay, not to jump to conclusions, we’ll hear him out.

Stewart goes on to say, “But the thing about science fiction and fantasy is that you can never, every say it’s the end, it’s over.”

Ah, phew.

What we can cherish is that it’s not the end just yet, and we get to look forward to his reunion with Hugh Jackman for the Wolverine sequel in 2017. Stewart gives us a little hint of what to expect, saying his role is “a very different Charles Xavier … nothing like the Charles Xavier you’ve seen in the past.”

Hmm, what can that mean? Is he half cyborg? Okay, again, jumping to conclusions.

Are you ready to say goodbye?
