Even Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch is taken aback by Doctor Strange‘s awesomeness, and he is the one portraying the Marvel surgeon-turned-superhero.

He may not be so much surprised but more in awe of seeing it all put together on screen. Cumberbatch got a first look at new footage from the film, with the second trailer revealed at this year’s Comic Con.

In an interview to appear in the upcoming issue of Empire, he talks about seeing footage for the first time, saying, “Some bits made me think, ‘Wow. God. That’s what I’m part of.'”

He goes on to explain what the before and after was like for him, saying, “You have conceptual art that they show you, but you only realize what you’re part of at the end of the process.”

There were some practical effects, too, which Cumberbatch was able to work off of on set, with him saying, “That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy the effects while we were shooting, because a lot of them were real elements, whether it was sets that make a room minuscule, or costume designs.”

He describes the character Doctor Strange to Empire as “arrogant, but also humorous.”

We’re getting a strong sense of humility from Cumberbatch in this interview.
