Yesterday (August 29) seemed like any other day. Birds in the trees. People out on the street. Then, with no explanation, Ben Affleck tweeted a silent video of a chap in a black and orange mask, and the internet exploded.

That’s because that’s not just any guy in a black and orange mask. Batman fans quickly realized he was none other than classic DC Comics character Deathstroke, a.k.a. Slade Wilson, in what appeared to be a screen test for Ben’s upcoming standalone Batman movie.

The Argo director will not only be starring as the Caped Crusader in his first solo outing since 2008’s The Dark Knight, but will also direct the movie, due out in 2018.

Let’s just say people were excited.

The Wrap.com later confirmed Deathstroke will be the main villain in the as-yet-untitled movie. A mercenary and assassin with enhanced physical and mental abilities, he encounters Batman a number of times in the original comics, and has even popped up as an adversary in the TV version of Arrow, played by Manu Bennett, before being cut from the show amid speculation that the character would appear in a DC movie instead.

Now it seems he’ll take center stage in one of the most hotly-anticipated movies yet, and with his reputation as one of the most proficient fighters in the DC Universe, he looks set to be a major threat.

The other star of the new Batman movie, according to Ben’s video anyway, was met with less excitement: what looks to be a large dehumidifier unit.
