Previous collaborations Crazy, Stupid, Love and 2013’s Gangster Squad prove Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone have enough on-screen chemistry to rival any classic Hollywood couple.

And before you can say “Fred and Ginger,” they’ve popped up in upcoming movie La La Land, a modern take on the classic Golden Age musical. They play Mia and Sebastian, a couple of dreamers just trying to make it big in Hollywood—she, a lonely aspiring actress, and he, a cocky jazz pianist—in a tale that looks set to be full of the requisite glamor and big-hearted romance.

So far, so nostalgic. But it’s a huge change in direction for writer Damien Chazelle, whose last film Whiplash dealt with the blood, sweat, and tears of failed ambition: La La Land, on the other hand, looks set to provide a dreamy and neon-soaked depiction of Tinseltown.

The lyrics of the original song hint at something darker, however: “City of stars, are you shining just for me? City of stars, there’s so much I can’t see,” sings Gosling. “Is this the start of something wonderful and new – or one more dream that I cannot make true.”

Whiplash‘s J.K. Simmons, singer John Legend, and The Big Short‘s Finn Wittrock also star, but the teaser trailer released yesterday (July 13) understandably stays focussed on Ryan and Emma:

La La Land opens on limited release December 2, before expanding to further theaters December 16.
