What do you mean you never knew Sir Patrick Stewart had a secret line in cowboy songs? It may sound outlandish, but it’s true: yesterday (July 4), while you were all grilling hot dogs and watching fireworks, “Cowboy Pat” quietly dropped a video promoting his latest collection.

Now, it may seem odd that someone so quintessentially English is covering American country classics, but he wouldn’t be the first Star Trek actor to release an album: fellow starship Enterprise crew member William Shatner has released four studio albums to date.

Not only that, but Patrick’s wife is singer and songwriter Sunny Ozell, who appears in the clip. With its take on an infomercial promising duets with Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood, however, we knew something was up:

So what’s it all about? Well, the biggest clue comes on the specially-created website for the collection. Above an image of a horse and trap that says “pony up” is a link to the International Rescue Committee, a charitable organization Patrick has supported for a number of years that helps crisis-afflicted families from around the world. The bad news is that it looks like the boxset is already sold out on vinyl and cassette.

So there you have it: Professor X gets his yee-haw on. Next you’ll be telling us you had no idea Sir Ian McKellen sang the blues.
