It’s been recently confirmed that Star Wars star John Boyega is set to star in the Pacific Rim sequel as Idris Elba‘s character’s son.

Pacific Rim co-creator Guillermo del Toro talked about the casting news, saying, “I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox. The Pacific Rim universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. ‘The World saving the world’ was our goal and I couldn’t think of a better man for the job.”

Boyega returned the sentiment with this tweet:

And it looks like he and his newly founded company will be acting as co-producer:

The first installment was set in the future, where we witnessed humankind battling monstrous sea creatures with robot-like weapons called Jaegers. The Jaegers are larger than life machines, operated by two pilots.

If you need a reminder, here’s the trailer for the original:

The details on the follow-up have yet to be released, but it’s predicted Charlie Hunnam will return as Raleigh Becket. Del Toro and Travis Beacham will collaborate on the screenplay, with Steven S. DeKnight (Daredevil, Smallville) in the director’s chair.

Are you looking forward to the sequel?
