America Ferrera and some of the other Ugly Betty cast members got together in Austin, Texas for a panel at the ATX Television Festival.

You may remember back in 2009 when Adele made an appearance on Ugly Betty. Leading up to her cameo, Adele had just won a Grammy for Best New Artist and appeared on Saturday Night Live in the same episode with Sarah Palin.

In other words, Adele’s star had already risen. Actually, in an interview from 2015 Adele said her success in the U.S. could be credited to Palin (but we digress).

The panel discussion in Austin turned to Adele’s guest role on Ugly Betty, with the moderator saying, “Ugly Betty was so cutting edge. She was the Adele fan, before any of us.”

Ferrera steps in to clarify, saying, “Yeah, that was me. That was America.”

We’re a little wary of anyone who speaks in the third person, but moving on …

Ferrera expanded on the story in the below clip, saying, “I had her album, 19, and, anyway, she was on SNL the night Sarah Palin was on SNL, remember? I went and I was like singing every word to songs that people didn’t know and some guy’s like, ‘Do you want to go meet her?’ And I was like, ‘I’m going to die.'”

Apparently Adele was a fan of the show, and the feelings were mutual.

You can check out Ferrera telling the story about how Adele being on the show came to be, over at Entertainment Weekly or in the below clip:

If Adele’s performance on Ugly Betty is a vague memory, here’s a refresher:

Is America kidding? You tell us!
