We first saw Asa Butterfield as a child actor in films like The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (2008) and Martin Scorsese’s Hugo (2011), and now he’s a full-fledged teenager living on Mars … well, to clarify, living on Mars in the film Space Between Us.
That would be a pretty big news day if he were the first Earthling to move to the uninhabited planet (but we digress).
Butterfield takes on the role of Gardner Eliot, the first being to be raised on Mars. He was born inflight during the inaugural mission to colonize the planet, and his existence remains “classified.” His only contact with humans is with the other Mars residents, which is about 15 or less.
Eliot befriends an Earth girl, whom he keeps in contact with through video chat. She’s not quite believing his “I’m from Mars” story.
It’s not clear if he has access to TV or films to learn about Earth, because he’s startled when seeing a horse for the first time in the below trailer:
Butterfield is joined by Gary Oldman, Carla Gugino, and Britt Robertson, who plays his love interest.
Space Between Us hits theaters on August 19.
