First off, it’s been 20 years since Independence Day opened in theaters. Twenty years. Here’s a quick gif of what that information is doing to our brain.

Now we’ve got that nasty bit of business out of the way, let’s get excited about Independence Day Mark 2, or Independence Day: Resurgence as it’s now known.

Roland Emmerich is back in the director’s seat, and Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch and Vivica A. Fox from the original cast are all returning, just as those pesky extraterrestrials make a move on planet Earth once again. Joining them are Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games), Maika Monroe (The Guest, It Follows) and the inimitable Charlotte Gainsbourg in their quest to defeat them.

Will Smith, on the other hand, is not returning. It was arguably his role as charismatic, cigar-chomping, alien-punching Captain Steve Hiller that propelled him into being the box office titan he is today, which makes his absence all the more disappointing.

Step forward Survivor’s Remorse and Level Up‘s Jessie Usher. He plays Hiller’s grown-up son Dylan, who’s determined to save the day just like his hero dad. This time, though, it seems it’s London the aliens have got it in for. (Maybe they’re annoyed about the demise of Downton Abbey too.)

Here’s the trailer:

Independence Day: Resurgence doesn’t open on Independence Day. It opens on June 26.
