It’s been a busy year so far for Scarlett Johansson, what with her roles in upcoming movies The Jungle Book, Captain America: Civil War, and the controversy surrounding her casting in the Hollywood remake of Japanese classic Ghost in the Shell.
That’s not all she’s got planned, however. Tracking Board is reporting that ScarJo is in talks to play socialite, novelist and so-called “first American flapper” Zelda Fitzgerald in The Beautiful and the Damned.
The movie focuses on the tumultuous and doomed love affair between Jazz Age icons F. Scott Fitzgerald and Zelda Sayre, with its title coming from a book by the famed Great Gatsby author, which was itself a thinly veiled novelization of their life together.
While her husband used their rocky marriage as inspiration for his work, Zelda’s writing career foundered, and she was eventually diagnosed with schizophrenia and admitted to a sanatorium.
The script by Hanna Weg has been kicking around for a while now, having been included on the Black List, an annual survey of screenplays most liked by studio executives but not yet produced, in 2007 and 2008. Keira Knightley was originally attached to the project, with The Notebook‘s Nick Cassavetes rumored to be directing at one point.
Scarlett will have to fit it in her busy schedule somehow. As well as the current slate, she also set to star in a Black Widow spin-off movie, an R-rated comedy feature called Move that Body, and an adaptation of Jon Ronson’s The Psychopath Test by Jay Roach (Trumbo).
