So far we know Tom Holland will star as Peter Parker and Marissa Tomei as his Aunt May, but not much else about Sony’s reboot of the Spider-Man franchise, due in theaters next year.
That is until today, however: the word is that 19-year-old singer and actress Zendaya Coleman—known to Disney Channel fans as simply Zendaya—will play a character called “Michelle.”
She’ll be the female lead alongside 19-year-old Tom, but—gasp! Bechdel test devotees rejoice!—will apparently not be Spidey’s love interest.
So who is this mysterious Michelle? Is she just a reincarnation of Gwen Stacy (played by Emma Stone in 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man) or Mary Jane ‘MJ’ Wallace (Kirsten Dunst in the 2002-2007 Spider-Man trilogy)?
io9 reports that she’s more than likely Michelle Gonzalez, Peter Parker’s roommate who first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man comics during writer Marc Guggenheim‘s run.
Meanwhile, in the DC universe, Whiplash star and Spider-Man veteran JK Simmons has been cast as Gotham City’s Commissioner Gordon in Justice League—a movie positively bursting at the seams with superheroes, with Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill’s Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Aquaman (Jason Momoa), the Flash (Ezra Miller) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher) all featured.
Filming starts in mid-April, with the first part of the duology (yep, that’s the word) due out in 2017.Read More
