Why go to Ecuador when you can stay at home and eat snacks?

That’s what struggling radio journalist Frank (Eric Bana) and sound engineer Finch (Ricky Gervais) figure in new Netflix comedy Special Correspondents. They pretend to be on the ground in war-torn Ecuador when they’re actually in an apartment above a restaurant in Queens, with a bottle of wine and a bag of chips.

Written and directed by Gervais, the movie is a remake of a 2009 French film of the same name (in French, natch).

It certainly seems like a good ruse. Gervais’ characters aren’t known for their good ideas, however, and Frank and Finch are no exception. When their TV rival (Benjamin Bratt) reports the duo are missing (a not altogether untrue fact), they’re forced to go to Ecuador after all.

As well as Bana, Gervais and Bratt, the cast includes Ugly Betty‘s America Ferrera, Kelly Macdonald (Boardwalk Empire) and Vera Farmiga of Bates Motel.

Special Correspondents will be available to stream on Netflix from April 29.
