You’ve probably already heard the news: Elijah Wood is coming to BBC AMERICA! As first reported by Deadline last week, Wood has been cast as the co-lead in Dirk Gently, the network’s new series based on Douglas Adams‘ Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency novels. (Chronicle screenwriter Max Landis is the visionary behind this comedic thriller, set for a fall 2016 premiere.) Wood will play Todd, the “reluctant assistant” to holistic detective Dirk Gently as the pair attempt to solve a major mystery.
Wood has been a fixture in pop culture for more than a quarter-century, beginning with his first film role as a child star in Back to the Future 2. He’s been so ubiquitous that you may think you know everything about the actor. Not so fast, Frodo. Watch these seven interviews to get a bit more up close and personal with the Lord of the Rings icon. If anything, you’ll walk away from these clips knowing that Wood is a genuinely nice guy.
He survived child stardom with the help of a secret weapon
He grew up in Tinseltown, but Wood has avoided becoming a Hollywood casualty, and he has one person to thank for that.
He’s had a funny encounter with Jack Nicholson
Who in Hollywood doesn’t have a Jack Nicholson story? But Elijah’s meeting at the Oscars with Jack, in which the Hollywood legend critiqued LOTR, is priceless. He recalls the encounter to Robin Williams and Jennifer Saunders on BBC AMERICA’s The Graham Norton Show.
He’s a huge record nerd
You can add being a bad-ass DJ to Elijah’s list of accomplishments. I bow before his encyclopedic knowledge of music, which he displays in this clip. Wouldn’t you want to go vinyl shopping with Elijah Wood?
He can break into the Frodo voice at any time
Here he is doing a on-the-spot reading of some pretty sexy made-up dialogue from LOTR with Kylie Minogue on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live.
He’s an incredibly good sport
Watch as Elijah’s LOTR co-star Dominic Monaghan pranks him by pretending to be a German interviewer. Elijah is clearly caught off guard by some of the questions, but he takes it all in stride.
He can take a compliment
How many celebrities can handle being called “sexy” and “cute” to their faces without blushing? Not many.
He’s got flow
Elijah has an MC’s way with a rhyme, as this interview with Seth Meyers shows.
