Well, look who it is. David Beckham retired as a professional footballer in 2013, but he’s still making headlines and landing covers.
His latest is one of the biggest honors in terms of celebrity recognition, being named Sexiest Man Alive by People. The announcement was made on Jimmy Kimmel Live during a live broadcast Tuesday night (November 17) after a round of yes and no questions:
The U.S. magazine points out he’s a global superstar, devoted husband and down-to-earth dad of four and manages to stay humble all the while.
Beckham, 40, accepted the award, telling People, “It’s a huge honor. And I’m very pleased to accept.”
He talks about his self-perception in this week’s cover story, saying, “I never feel that I’m an attractive, sexy person.”
Sure, he puts some thought into what he wears and likes to throw on a nice suit, but he doesn’t take his outward appearance too seriously.
But, he does go on to talk about his fashion designer wife Victoria’s response to the new title, saying, “I would hope that she feels this way about me all the time anyway!”
The British athlete has been on the public’s radar for more than two decades, playing for soccer teams like Manchester United, England, Real Madrid and L.A. Galaxy. He’s piggybacked off his sports career, modeling in a number of fashion campaigns and commercials. He’s been spotted in one-off acting roles like in the BBC’s Sports Relief Only Fools and Horses skit.
Just this year he broke a social media record, gaining the most Instagram followers in the shortest amount of time. He topped five million in less than a week.
And what does he get up to on Instagram? Oh, sharing photos like this heartwarming snap of his hand-drawn tattoo by his wee daughter Harper:
